Attention Last Minute Shoppers -

The number of shopping days until Christmas is getting smaller and, if you have yet to cross even the first name off your list, it's time to get serious. That means, using every available resource… your computer, your telephone and your imagination.

Most of us are familiar with online shopping. If you're reading this before December 19, you can still make your purchases online with standard shipping. After that, you'll have to use faster, and more costly shipping options if you want that package to arrive by Christmas.

If you want to avoid those hefty shipping fees, many stores allow you to make your purchase online and pick it up in the stores. More than 25 nationwide chains, including Sears, Comp USA and Circuit City, are offering this service. Order that cell phone or DVD player during the store's busiest hours and pick it up after the crowds have gone.

At this late date, don't head to the store without first making a phone call to see if your merchandise is available. Some stores will allow you to make a credit card purchase over the phone. If not, most retailers will hold your items for a reasonable period of time. Be sure to write down the name of the sales person and the time you called and ask them politely to clearly mark your purchases with your name and phone number.

If you're really stuck for time and ideas, gift cards of all sorts are available and you can find them in most grocery stores. A gift card to a local movie theater is a great idea for film buffs. A gift certificate for a favorite restaurant will be a hit with most anyone.

As a last resort, you may have to hit the malls. If so, shop early or shop late to avoid the mid-day rush. Or, shop during the dinner hour when the shoppers are filling the food courts.
