Happy Mother's Day to
all of our ZenMothers!!

This Sunday, May 11th, is the official day we celebrate Moms.  Mother’s Day has been observed in the United States since 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as a day for Americans to honor mothers who had lost their sons to war.  Mother’s Day has expanded into a day of giving thanks to all moms.  We wish you the happiest of days as we celebrate our motherhood and honor the women who nurtured and raised us.

Cap, Gown & Diaper Bag?

Most of the nearly 13 million single family homes in the U.S. are headed by single mothers. Many of those moms struggle to make ends meet because they lack the education to gain a better-paying job. Between work and parenting responsibilities, carving out time and money to further their education is often not an option. Three universities are trying to change that by offering millions of dollars in scholarships for single moms. Check out Project Working Mom. The deadline to apply is April 30. (more)

Looking at new schools? Curious about
private vs. public? Need help with college prep?

Our favorite website of the week, great schools is an excellent resource for school related topics.

It's also the recent Winner of the 2007 Webby Award for Best Family and Parenting Site - The People's Voice Award.

Research and compare K-12 schools in your neighborhood, district or across the nation. Even if you are moving to another state, you can access data based on standardized test results, ratings and parent reviews. The site also offers guides with tips to help you have a successful school visit. i.e. what questions to ask, what to look for in the classrooms.

A highlight of "great schools" is their "Countdown to College" section for you and your high school students. In association with the College Board, this section provides an action plan for each year, (freshman through senior), on the road to college.

The information on this web site helps parents and students approach college in a step-by-step manner.  Whether your child is preparing for the SAT,  reviewing an academic schedule with the school counselor or seeking insight into financial aid, great schools provides the tools you need.

Need a Babysitter? No problem.

Looking for a reliable babysitter?  Try Sittercity, a nationwide agency, modeled after an online dating service, that introduces parents to experienced babysitters.

Founder and CEO Genevieve Thiers is an expert in the childcare field.  The eldest of 7 children, Thiers worked her way through college by babysitting for more than 30 families.  While attending Boston College, she got the idea to create one, central place where parents and sitters could meet.  She formed Sittercity, the first babysitting agency in the country to do business on the Internet.

Users type their zip code into the search bar on the Sitter City web site to find information about sitters near most U.S. cities.  That information includes rates, photographs (optional), ages, skills and certifications and areas of expertise.  Sittercity works with nannies, tutors, eldercare givers, house sitters and pet sitters.  The web site also offers babysitting tips and safety training resources.

In select cities, Sittercity hosts "SpeedSitting®" events, where sitters share business cards, background checks and references with parents.  Parents spend 5 minutes with each sitter, speed-dating style, and contact their favorites later, to conduct longer interviews.

The company boasts more than 500,000 users in cities across the United States and, since its start in 2001, it's earned Thiers the Small Business Administration's Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2006, the Women's Business Development Center's Rising Star Award for 2005 and a 2005 Webby.

The service is free for sitters. Check out www.sittercity.com for more information.
